For this trip I’m going to take you to a place close to my heart and also our Colorado neighbors Arizona! The real gem I want to take you to is Lake Havasu City, Arizona!
Located in Western Arizona and known for it’s numerous hiking trails in the near dessert and the watersports on Lake Havasu. Also called Arizona’s playground, the city was established on September 30, 1963 by Robert P. McCulloch & C.V. Wood. The town has done much growing since then and I’m excited to share it with you!
I’ll start from the outside in because there is a specific place I’m leaving until the very end to tell you about.
So, first on my list of places to stop, the cities claim to fame is the London Bride, yes I said London Bridge like the song. I’m sure you’re wondering how exactly a bridge from London ended up in the middle of the United States in a dessert, well I was too so I did some research! The bride was built in the 1830’s by John Rennie and his son and spanned the River Thomas in London, England. The bridge couldn’t support the amount of modern traffic above so long story short the City of London sold it Robert P. McCulloch. He took it upon himself, and had granite blocks numbered, purchased and transferred, along with the bridge to the little City of Lake Havasu. The bridge was completed in 1971 and the city held an opening ceremony where many American and British spectators and dignitaries came to see the historical landmark.
Next, one of the great things about living in an active city or state is, when you surround yourself with the great outdoors you realize that there is so much exploring, adventuring and opportunity around you. Being in Colorado I’ve learned not to take that for granted, unfortunately during the winter some of those outdoor options are no loner options for you, but that is not the story when you live in the dessert! Lake Havasu State Park shows us just that, there is boating, water sports, and fishing through the park; swimming and camping along the waters edge and many different campgrounds throughout the park as well. The camp ground is open year round and have very affordable prices for nightly camping at $35 and beachfront sites at $40. Grab your boat, or jet skies blow up some tubes and get them out on the water! I personally love wakeboarding and this is one of the best places to go especially in the winter here in Colorado I can guarantee it’ll still be nice in AZ. With average temperatures ranging from 71 degrees in February to 108 degrees in July! Lake Havasu State Park is an incredible place to pitch a tent and enjoy the outdoors along with some fantastic sunshine!
My last and most special stop in Lake Havasu City is Havasu Falls, one of the most mesmerizing, beautiful locations you will ever set your eyes on! Havasu Falls is part of Havasu Creek located in the Grand
Canyon and within the Havasupai tribal lands.
Now I will note: it take 10 miles each way to hike to the blue green waterfalls of Havasupai
The falls are a major destination for hikers of all sorts, it’s a hidden gem and can be difficult to get reservations, but
for those who can plan ahead and enjoy hikes of 8 miles or more this is one spot you need to put on your bucket list! The Havasupai people lie near the falls in a village called Supai, the Havasupai people also know as Havasu or ‘Baaja are the people of the blue green waters and the tradition is that they are the guardians of the Grand Canyon.
After a good 20 mile hike in and back out of the falls I’m sure you would be ready to grab some good food and here are the top three spots in town to grab a bite of the local cuisine.
- Juicy’s the Place with Great Food- a home town, family owned restaurant. Mike and his wife Sharon take great pride in the restaurant that they built and named after their poor dog, visit the website here to get the full story as to how this place got it’s name! Juicy’s is know for great family friendly service and their great home cooked meals. Their menu is full from breakfast to dinner and late night snacks, and great cocktails and desserts finish off the menu. Make sure to make it here when you come to visit!
2. Barley Brothers Brewery-A cold brew would go down well after all the fun you’ll have out by the lake and this is the place to grab one! It’s Havasu’s original microbrewery. A great pub right off the water and you can see London Bridge from the window! This family style pub is a great place to grab an award winning microbrew and a custom wood fired pizza! This American pub has a great menu and brews to choose from check it out yourself right here!
3. The Turtle Grille- Located inside the Nautical Beachfront Resort the Turtle Grille offers you succulent seafood and a great atmosphere into your own beach world. The hotel itself is incredible and offers many different recreational activities an on site water park and of course you have Lake Havasu. The Grille offers an island vibe with island flavors to match, including calamari, steamed crab legs, and fish tacos. Of course they have more options for those of us who don’t necessarily have our sea legs jest yet haha 😉 including chicken wings, pulled pork sliders. A great place to relax and wind down after a long day.
I hope you guys enjoyed this trip as much as I did, remember to come back next week and I’ll reveal the next trip we’re going on! Check out my Instagram to get clues for the new destination each week!
